“Understanding Doug Latz”
Its been a while since my last post and I apologize for that. Since the last post: I finished my internship at the Aspen Daily News, drove to North Carolina for spring break vacation on Bald Head Island with some incredible friends, and am back at Ohio University.
I’ve been busy this spring working on expanding a long term project for the 4th addition of VisCom’s Soul of Athens student project. I’m working on a project with a mentally handicapped man by the name of Doug that I had the pleasure of meeting while working at a local bicycle shop back in freshman year. This project has been a work in progress throughout my college career and I’m excited to take it to a new level. After many late nights in the computer lab, production has finally wrapped up and I’m quite pleased with the final product. Below are some behind-the-scenes images as well as a few favorites I shot this spring. Check out the countdown page and stay tuned for the multimedia story that’ll launch sometime in August.

back in Athens
Its great to be back in Athens for my senior year. The 4 years have flown by and I can’t believe it’s almost over.
So far, the fall has been great but busy. My picture story class is eating up much of my time along with a few other classes. I wish I had more time to get out and enjoy the Southeast Ohio fall because its beautiful down here this time of year. At least the foliage makes driving around to complete photo assignments that much better.
Below are some frames from the beginning of fall quarter 2009 with friends in Athens. Enjoy

I’m learning to ride a unicycle. My family had one collecting dust in the garage at home so I thought I’d bring it to Athens and try to learn. Friend and fellow photojournalist Tyler Sutherland as been unicycling since the spring and helped me get started. It’s been a fun challenge and am getting better at it but still have a ways to go.

Athens Bicycle Co-op manager Eric Cornwell also rides a unicycle. unicycle gang?

Lincoln, Ma to Athens, Oh with Foley
I was able to convince my buddy Ben to make the drive back to school with me from Lincoln. It was a fun 13 hour road trip that we split and knocked out in one day. He then hung out for a few days and enjoyed Athens.

Our block experienced a power outage so we took advantage of the darkness and played with some light painting.

We explored the Ridges – an abandoned Mental Hospital that OU purchased and converted some of the wards to admin offices.
