Mike Foley

Good friend and world-class climber Mike Foley humored me with a photo concept I’ve been wanting to do for some time now. Thanks to Spenser Heaps for helping out with the lights.

Hidden Gem Aerials

with one comment

I got the opportunity a few weeks ago to take some aerial photos to accompany a weekly series that the Aspen Daily News is starting called Hidden Gems. It was an amazing experience to fly around in a little 4 seater plane taking photos of some truly incredible mountains and land.

From the article:

“This is the first in a weekly series profiling the areas proposed by the Hidden Gems campaign for federal wilderness designation. The campaign, led by Carbondale’s Wilderness Workshop, calls for more than 400,000 acres to be protected as wilderness. Most of the land is in the White River and Gunnison national forests, and includes areas in Pitkin, Gunnison, Eagle and Summit counties. An act of the U.S. Congress is required to designate new wilderness. The campaign has drawn criticism from some outdoor recreationalists, because all mechanized use and development is barred in federal wilderness.”

you can read the rest of the story here.

back in Athens

without comments

Its great to be back in Athens for my senior year. The 4 years have flown by and I can’t believe it’s almost over.

So far, the fall has been great but busy. My picture story class is eating up much of my time along with a few other classes. I wish I had more time to get out and enjoy the Southeast Ohio fall because its beautiful down here this time of year. At least the foliage makes driving around to complete photo assignments that much better.

Below are some frames from the beginning of fall quarter 2009  with friends in Athens. Enjoy

I’m learning to ride a unicycle. My family had one collecting dust in the garage at home so I thought I’d bring it to Athens and try to learn. Friend and fellow photojournalist Tyler Sutherland as been unicycling since the spring and helped me get started. It’s been a fun challenge and am getting better at it but still have a ways to go.

Athens Bicycle Co-op manager Eric Cornwell also rides a unicycle. unicycle gang?

Photo adventures with Sam

without comments

Over the summer Sam Walker and I would go for photo adventures every now and then. It was always more of an excuse to get lost and enjoy the local scenery.

Its always very refreshing to contemplate photography with Sam. Believe it or not, he doesn’t own a digital camera. He shoots all sorts of film formats and is always experimenting with new cameras, film, or fine tuning his darkroom methods. I have great respect for his old school style and perhaps, stubbornness? Despite coming from different photo worlds, I think we both bring great things to the table when bouncing ideas off each other.
